The hermitages of Atienza
Four sanctuaries that mark the village's calendar and landscape.
The Hermitage of Our Lady of the Star, about 3 km along the Madrigal road, is the heart of La Caballada: square in plan, with an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece and a porch of sabina-wood pillars, it includes a dining room for the brotherhood meal. The Humilladero, or hermitage of the Santo, welcomes the traveller at the entrance to Atienza, at the junction of the CM-110 and GU-134, with a park of tables and swings.
The Hermitage of Our Lady of Val, north of the village and about 500 m from the old town, is the one of greatest artistic value: its Romanesque portal bears an unusual archivolt of ten figures. Santa Lucía, 3 km away beside the CM-1001, was built in the 16th century and hosted La Caballada while the Estrella hermitage was being rebuilt.
