Three easy bike routes to do with kids or as a beginner: the castle loop, the Camino de la Estrella and the connection with Sigüenza on quiet roads.

Atienza is famous for hard routes due to its elevation, but there are three easy routes perfect for families or beginners.

Route 1 · Castle and hermitages loop (10 km)

Start in Atienza, descend GU-134 to the Humilladero hermitage (1 km, flat), continue by minor road to Santa Lucía (3 km more) and return by a parallel path. Total 10 km with moderate slope.

Route 2 · To the Estrella hermitage (6 km each way)

The classic La Caballada route. Leave town by the Madrigal road, 3 km of gentle climb to the hermitage. Picnic in the wooded surroundings and return by the same path.

Route 3 · Atienza – Madrigal (5 km)

Minor road with little traffic to the village of Madrigal. Good morning objective: coffee in Madrigal and return by the same route. Mostly flat.

Tips for going with kids

Helmet always. Carry extra water. In July or August, leave early. No bike shop in Atienza: bring spare inner tube and pump. Best decision: always end with ice cream in the Plaza del Trigo.
