The best photos of Atienza: 7 viewpoints of the castle and the village

The crag at dawn, the walled old town at sunset, the entrance via La Bodera. The 7 best Atienza viewpoints for photography and the best time for each.

Atienza is one of the most photogenic villages in Castile. Its silhouette —rock castle on the crag, medieval old town at its feet, sierra as backdrop— lends itself to almost any hour and any light.

1. The castle crag at dawn

Dawn sidelight paints the crag orange for about 20 minutes. Take advantage of the first half-hour after sunrise: the fortress is lit and the village, in shadow, cuts the silhouette.

2. La Bodera: the postcard entrance to the village

The CM-1003 road from La Bodera offers probably the most photogenic entrance to Atienza: at a turn the castle suddenly appears over the crag. Stop on the way out of La Bodera and shoot with a medium tele (70-200 mm) to compress the scene.

3. Plaza del Trigo in blue hour

The porches and the church of San Juan are lit in the late afternoon. In winter blue hour (around 18:30) the combination of warm artificial light in the porches and deep sky is textbook.

4. Cerro Padrastro: panoramic of Atienza

For a full panoramic of the castle and the village together, climb the Cerro Padrastro south of the village. The path is short and the view includes sierra, crag and old town. Best light: late afternoon with sidelight.

5. Walls and Arch of the Virgin

The wall section with tower and the Virgin's Arch are one of the most photogenic corners of the medieval old town. Morning light works very well.

6. Calle Real and porches

Calle Real, the backbone of the old town, is flanked by heraldic houses and porches. On low-light days, shoot in black and white: stone textures gain strength.

7. The Bodera Crag and the Sweet & Salt Landscape

To step away from the village and tell the UNESCO-candidate territory, drive to La Peña Bodera and the Salado valley viewpoints. Sunset light, with the sierra in the background, is the best.
