Pretty villages of Guadalajara: why Atienza is a must-see

From the Black Architecture villages to the Señorío de Molina, Guadalajara hosts some of Castile's most beautiful towns. Atienza, declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1962, is among the must-sees for concrete reasons.

The province of Guadalajara concentrates a surprising density of beautiful villages: the Black Architecture of the Ocejón, Sigüenza with its cathedral, Hita with its wall, Pastrana, Brihuega, the villages of Molina de Aragón… And among them all, Atienza. Its 1962 declaration as a Historic-Artistic Site, its castle from the Song of the Cid and the UNESCO “Sweet & Salt Landscape” candidacy place it in a category of its own.

The highest historical density in Castile

Few villages in Spain bring together, on a single hill and with little more than 400 inhabitants, a castle of pre-Roman origin, seven medieval churches, four open museums, two lines of wall and an intact arcaded old town. That density justifies the declaration as a Historic-Artistic Site since 1962 and underpins the UNESCO candidacy.

A festival unbroken since 1162

What sets Atienza apart from other postcard villages is La Caballada. It is not a re-enactment: every Pentecost Sunday, the village's muleteers repeat a ride that in 1162 saved the boy king Alfonso VIII. The Holy Trinity Brotherhood preserves documentation from the 12th century. The festival holds the status of National Tourist Interest.

The Sweet & Salt Landscape: a UNESCO candidacy

Atienza is bidding for UNESCO World Heritage together with Sigüenza under the “Sweet & Salt Landscape” candidacy. The dossier has advanced to the preliminary report stage and recognises a cultural landscape where fresh water and salt shaped trails, economy and architecture for centuries. It is Castilla-La Mancha's first candidacy at that stage.

Other pretty villages of Guadalajara to combine

If you are going to Atienza, you can link the visit with Sigüenza (30 minutes), Hita (1 h), Brihuega (1 h 15) or the Tejera Negra beech forest and the Black Architecture villages of Ocejón (Majaelrayo, Campillo de Ranas, El Espinar) at just over an hour. The entire province is a map of well-preserved villages: Atienza is one of its natural gateways.
